Power BI Fundamentals

Track: Business Intelligence, Quality Management and Reporting

Presenter: Claire Wennberg

Want to learn a better way to present information from MEDITECH Data Repository? Come to our Tuesday Workshop to get immediate hands-on experience with Microsoft Power BI Desktop. Power BI puts dynamic and interactive report design at your fingertips, making it easy to improve your business and clinical analytics with easy to use and cost-effective report design tools. In this workshop, we’ll introduce you to the different desktop and cloud-based components of Microsoft’s business intelligence platform. Then we’ll dive in and show you how to build your own inpatient dashboard with Power BI Desktop while demonstrating some of the software’s niftier features - like slicers and drill-through capability - that will give your reports a great user experience.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop for real-time hands-on report building experience. (If you can’t, don’t worry, you can follow along as our instructors show you how.) When you’re finished, you’ll have a report you can use with your own MEDITECH Data Repository after you return home from the conference. Power BI will impress you with its beautiful interface, instant performance, and deep ability to slice and dice your data any way you want – it’s unlike anything used until now for reporting from Data Repository. Don’t miss this fun and informative workshop!

Evolving Leadership Skills to Be an Effective and Resilient Leader

Healthcare organizations continue to face challenges with meeting today’s demands and positioning their organization for the future. In 2024, healthcare organizations continued to face the ongoing challenges of severe staffing shortages, employee burn-out, and rising operational costs. Demands continue to grow, budgets continue to shrink and requirements by regulatory agencies, providers, payers, and patients to provide timely accurate data and enhanced cost-effective services are making it a challenge just to keep the lights on. Everyone is looking for that “magic bullet” to bring some relief to a somewhat chaotic environment.

Healthcare leaders need to be resilient and equipped to play a pivotal role in facing these challenges and support leading their organizations to make difficult decisions on what to invest that will bring the highest value to their organization. They also need to know how to align their IT organization with the needs of the organization and ensure execution is set up for success. Since the majority of business initiatives have a technology component, the role of the IT leader has become more critical in being involved in decision making, supporting the alignment/ prioritization of IT investments and execution of these initiatives. 148 - Leveraging Power Apps and Power BI for Enhanced Data Insights at Northfield Hospital + Clinics

Date and time TBA PowerApps scalable

Track: Business Intelligence, Quality Management and Reporting

Presenters: Vern Lougheed and Claire Wennberg
Organizations: Northfield Hospital + Clinics, Northfield, Minnesota; Acmeware, Inc.

This session will review approaches to integrating MEDITECH and non-MEDITECH data sources to provide near real-time clinical insights on operational patient visit data, bed availability, and resource utilization. By highlighting historical, current, and future trends, leaders can clearly see operational patterns and make real-time decisions. Integrating data sources eliminates manual processes involving Excel spreadsheets, written documentation, and word of mouth, ensuring accurate and complete information while saving time for staff to focus on patient care.

In this educational session, we will introduce the fundamentals of integrating Microsoft Power Apps into the Microsoft Power BI data analytics design & architecture to capture non-structured data elements. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to use Power Apps to create custom applications that interact with business data. The course covers key concepts and practical techniques for connecting Power Apps to Power BI, enabling users to visualize and analyze near real-time data through interactive dashboards.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the integration of Power Apps and Power BI: Gain a clear understanding of how Power Apps can be used to create custom applications that connect to Power BI for real-time data visualization and interaction.
  • Design custom applications with Power Apps: Build simple applications in Power Apps that can retrieve, update, and visualize data within Power BI dashboards, enhancing user interaction with business data.
  • Enhance data-driven decision-making: Use integrated Power Apps and Power BI solutions to create powerful, real-time business intelligence dashboards and reports that improve organizational decision-making.

power bi logo altIn this educational session, we will discuss the synergy between self-service tools, automated dataflows, and Microsoft's Power BI platform to enable non-technical users and data professionals alike to access, analyze, and visualize complex datasets effortlessly. It emphasizes how self-service tools empower users to build personalized reports using both MEDITECH data and external data sources, while dataflows automate the data preparation process, ensuring consistency and quality across all integrated datasets. Power BI acts as the central hub for visualization and reporting, offering real-time insights that drive decision-making.

This session will also address best practices for integrating these technologies into existing workflows and overcoming common challenges such as data governance, security, and scalability. By embracing this seamless integration, organizations can foster a culture of data-driven decision-making that leads to enhanced operational efficiency and a competitive edge in the marketplace.

We will discuss a near-real-time Safety Huddle Dashboard, covering metrics such as census, throughput, ED metrics (e.g., number of patients left without being seen), safety events (including falls and incident reports), and more. Additionally, we will explore a dashboard monitoring progress against monthly operational goals, such as visits per service line.

By the end of the course, learners will have a strong foundation in integrating self-service tools and Dataflows into their Power BI environment, boosting business intelligence, automation, and data integration to support more informed organizational decision-making.

Learner outcomes:

  • Understand the role of self-service tools in empowering non-technical users to access and analyze data independently, enabling personalized reporting and insights.
  • Leverage Dataflows in Power BI: Learn how to use Dataflows to automate data ingestion, transformation, and preparation, ensuring clean and consistent data for analysis.
  • Utilize Power BI effectively to create dynamic, real-time dashboards and reports, transforming raw data into actionable insights for informed decision-making.
